2. How do I register my child for school at Butterfield Elementary?

If you’re moving to Butterfield from another school, you should have already filled out withdrawal forms at your child’s previous school. When you come to the front office at Butterfield, we will give you paperwork to complete. You will also need your child’s birth certificate, immunization record, and two proofs of residency.

3. When can I enroll my child for kindergarten?

Kindergarten registration usually begins in mid-March each year. Call the front office at 579-5000 for the exact date. A kindergartener must be five years old prior to September 1 to register.

4. What time does my child need to be in his/her classroom in the morning?

Students should be present in class by 7:45AM, the official beginning of our day. If a student is not in class at this time, he/she will be given a tardy slip.

5. How early can I drop my child off at school?

Our playgrounds are opened and supervised at 7:25 AM each school day. Students must not be on school grounds prior to this time. If you require your child to be dropped off earlier than 7:25 AM, please visit our LEAP program information page to inquire about before and after school childcare. LEAP Program

6. How do I report my child’s absence?

Parents may call our 24-hour attendance hotline at 579-5028. Please leave your child’s name, teacher, reason for absence, planned return date, and a contact number in the message.

7. Do I still need to call the office if my child is just going to be late?

Yes. Even if you are late because of a doctor appointment, dentist appointment, etc. It is important to call the attendance hotline at 579-5028. If you don’t let us know, you are likely to get a phone call regarding the whereabouts of your child!

8. If I already left a message with my child’s teacher about an absence, do I still need to tell the Attendance Clerk about it?

Yes. Information can get lost, misplaced, or misdirected. Please inform the Attendance Clerk as well as your teacher.

9. When should I keep my child home from school for illness?

Parents are requested to keep their child home from school if he/she has an elevated temperature, nausea, or vomiting. In accordance with Pima County Health Department and district procedures, the student may return to school when they have been fever, nausea, and/or diarrhea free for 24 hours.

10. How do I request homework for my child if he/she is absent?

Teachers will prepare a complete package of “make-up” work for students who have been absent for three (3) days or longer. Please call the office as early in the morning as possible, but no later than 10:00 AM to request the work. Please plan to pick up the homework after 3:30 PM, allowing teachers time to get all the necessary paperwork and books to the front office. Arrangements can also be made to have assignments carried home with a neighbor child.

11. What is the latest time I can call to make departure changes for my child?

We request that all changes be made by 1:00 pm (11:45 on Fridays). If you wait until after this time, it becomes difficult to get the message to your child, as dismissal is a busy time of the day. As soon as you are aware that a change in your child’s departure routine needs to be made, please inform the front office by calling 579-5000.

12. Can I pick my child up early from school?

Custodial parents and/or legal guardians may pick up their child prior to regular dismissal time. Advanced notice is appreciated.

13. What if my child forgets his/her lunch or homework?

You may bring the forgotten items to the office. Students will receive the items at the first break in instruction. We will not interrupt classes unless it is an emergency.

14. Am I allowed to visit my child’s classroom during the day?

Parents are always welcome to visit the school and their child’s classroom. As a courtesy, please let the classroom teacher know in advance if you would like to visit. Giving advanced notice allows the teacher to prepare accordingly for the extra help. All school visitors must register in the front office. Please note – students may not bring student guests to school, as we cannot accept responsibility for children not enrolled at Butterfield.

15. How can I volunteer in my child's classroom?

Contact your child's teacher to see what kind of help might be needed. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application on an annual basis and submit it to the principal for approval. A parent or guardian of a student in the district is not required to be fingerprinted. All other volunteers are required to be fingerprinted and have a background check completed prior to beginning volunteer work. All volunteers will need to sign in and out each time work is done and obtain a visitors badge from the office.

16. How can I help support Butterfield Elementary?

Butterfield is always in need of volunteers, donations, community partnerships, and other resources. Another great way to help is to become involved in the Butterfield Community Activities Council (BCAC). BCAC

Make it a habit to check your child’s red Bobcat Folder at the end of each school day. You can also sign up for Notify Me on the Butterfield Web Page. A weekly newsletter with a message from the principal and activities for that week is sent out via Notify Me every Tuesday morning. 25. Can I bring an outside lunch to my child?

26. My child lost something at school. Where can we look to find the item?

Students are encouraged to keep track of personal items while at school. One important way to organize belongings is to make sure your child writes his or her name on items – especially things that are easily misplaced such as lunchboxes or jackets. A lost and found area is maintained outside of the library. Students are encouraged to look for misplaced belongings before and after school.

27. What happens to a student’s belongings that are left on the bus?

The driver will hold the items on the bus for the following day. The student must ask the driver for their items.

28. How do I find my child’s bus stop location and time?

1. What are school hours?

School starts at 8:00 am and students are released at 2:00 pm.

2. When can my child arrive at school in the morning?

Your students can arrive on campus no earlier than 7:40 am. If they are eating breakfast, they can arrive at 7:30 am. If they are too early, we will call to have them picked up until the correct time.

3. What time does my child need to be in their classroom in the morning?

Your student needs to be in class at 8:00 am when school starts. If they are being dropped off at 8:00 they will not have time to get to class which will result in an Unexcused Tardy. Many teachers start “Bell Work” promptly at 8:00.

4. What if I need to leave a message for my child?

If you need to get a message to your student please call before 1:15 pm as messages are given at 1:30 pm.

5. When do I need to inform the office if my child will be absent?

If your student needs to miss a day, please inform the office no later then 9:00 am by calling our hotline at 579-4848. It is a 24 hour recording. All students must be accounted for by 10:00 am everyday. You may call the office about your absence; we are open 6:30 am to 3:30 pm.

6. How do I get homework for my child when they are absent?

If you need a homework request, let us know when you call in the absence and the work will be in the Front Office after 2:30 pm. Requests need to be made no later then 10:00 am.

7. How will missing school effect my child?

Please only have your student miss when it is absolutely unavoidable as we are in school 180 days. When they miss 18 days every year for 13 years it adds up to 1 ¼ years (234 days)of missed school. This includes showing up late after appointments and leaving early for appointments.

8. Do I need to inform the office of any changes to my address or phone number?

MOST IMPORTANT PLEASE inform us of any and all address and phone # changes immediately for the welfare of your student.

8. How can I get in touch with my child’s teacher?

Call the main Roadrunner office at 616-6363. We are making every attempt to NOT interrupt classrooms during the school day. Sally or Tina will take your message and relay it to the proper individual. You may also click on the staff directory on this web-page and e-mail your child's teacher.

9. How can parents and grandparents get involved in helping in classrooms?

First, speak with your child’s teacher and find out how you can best help them (special events, sharing your special talents, or help each week). Next, see Tina in the front office to sign a volunteer agreement. Once it’s approved by Ms. Armenta, you may begin to help!

10. How do I register my student for school at Roadrunner?

If you’re moving to Roadrunner from another school you should have already filled out withdrawl forms at the old school. When you come to the front office at Roadrunner we will give you paperwork to complete. You will also need 2 pieces of mail to verify your current address, immunization history , birth certificate and for the registration forms to be completed. We will, in most cases, be able to start your child 24 hours after receiving the completed information. Please call the front office at 616-6363 if you have questions.

11. How will I know ahead of time what holidays are coming up during the school year?

Go to the MUSD Home page, put your cursor over schools, and slide down the drop-down list to click on the appropriate calendar.

12. How do I excuse my child’s absences?

Call 616-6363. Remember, if you’re going on vacation, you ALSO need to notify the school office. You must call prior to your absence in order for it to be excused.

13. Do you offer before and after school care?

Our LEAP program offers childcare from 6:00 am until 6:00 pm. Please call 616-6380 for more information.

14. What types of communication are there between school and home?

Our web-site, our monthly newsletters, our Tuesday Newsday folders, e-mail, phone calls, conferences, bulletins on the marquis, and by asking your child what’s going on!

15. What grade levels are taught at Roadrunner?

Preschool through 6th grades.

16. How can I find out about what’s going on at Roadrunner outside of the school day? (Dinners, movie nights, interest group meetings…)

17. Does Roadrunner collect soup labels, ink cartridges, box tops for education, and pop tabs?

Yes, we collect all of these things! Our PTO and committee groups are involved in keeping up with all of these causes!

18. How does your parent-pick up line work?

At the end of the day we release parent pick-up students first. You simply pull up in the circular drive, stay in your vehicle, and we will match your child up with you as you pull around. Please remember to always stay in your vehicle in the parent pick-up/drop-off lane, and keep the traffic flowing smoothly by pulling as far forward towards the playground as possible, and moving out of the lane once you have your child with you.

19. Why should I make a tax credit donation to Roadrunner, and how do I do it?

A tax credit donation is a terrific way for you to help your school and to earn a tax credit in the process. You have the option to specify in which way you would like your donation to be used (tutoring program, music program, etc.) You can access the tax credit donation form by visiting the MUSD home page and clicking on the tax credit link.

20. How do I get to Roadrunner School from Tucson?

1. The easiest way to get to Roadrunner from Tucson is to take the highway to the Avra Valley exit. You will travel about 14 miles on Avra Valley Road, then turn right on Anway Road. Turn left on Calle Carmela.
2. If you take the Marana exit you will go to the left at the bottom of the off-ramp, under the over-pass and around the curve. At the statue in front of the circle K you will turn to the right on Marana Road. Several miles up turn left at the stop sign onto Trico/Marana Road. Turn right at El Tiro, left at Anway, right at Calle Carmela.

21. How do I apply for free/reduced price lunches?

You will receive an application in your enrollment packet, or you can pick up an application in the front office.

4. How do I excuse my child’s absences?

Parents may call our attendance hotline at 579-4632, for your convenience this is a 24-hour recording. When you are calling to report your child’s absence please leave the student’s full name, grade, reason for their absence and a contact number.

Remember if you are going on vacation you must also notify the attendance office of these dates prior to your departure in order for them to be excused.

5. What if I forget to call my child in. Can I still excuse their absence?

If you forgot to report your child’s absence, you can call our attendance hotline at 579-4632 to excuse prior absence(s). Please be sure to leave the date(s) the student was absent, student’s full name, grade and reason for their absence(s).

6. Do I still need to call for my child if we are just going to be late?

Yes. Even if you are late because of a doctor appointment, dentist appointment, etc. It is important to call the attendance hotline at 579-4632. If you don’t let us know you are likely to get a phone call regarding the whereabouts of your child.

7. How do I request and early pick-up for my child?

Please call the front office at 579-4600 and press 0 for the receptionist. Do NOT call the attendance hotline. The attendance hotline is not a direct line to the attendance office it is a mailbox and is checked periodically throughout the day. If you leave a message for pick-up on this line we may not get it in time to have your child ready for pick-up.

8. What is the latest time I can request an early pick-up for my child?

We request that all messages be done by 3:45 pm. If you wait until after this time frame, it becomes difficult to get the message to your child. Dismissal is a frantic time of the day. As soon as you know you need to make a change in departure, inform the front office, this will allow minimal waiting time for you and your child.

9. Why does my child have unexcused tardies?

A student is only allowed 3 parent excused tardies per quarter. Any amount above three, even if you do sign them in, will remain as unexcused. When you child recieves three unexcused tardies they will most likely be put on lunch detention.

10. My child has been absent, how do I request homework?

In order for us to put in a homework request your child must have been absent for three (3) or more consecutive days.

If the child will be absent due to personal reasons such as a vacation or simply going out of town, it is the child’s responsibility to request the assignments they will be missing during that time frame.

However, your child’s homework is posted on the parent/ student portals. This is the ideal way for you to check your child’s work/ grades 24 hours a day from any computer connected to the internet.

11. How does my child get a bus pass if I allow them to ride home with a friend?

Parents must send a signed note with student to have permission to ride a bus other than their assigned bus. They may pick up a bus pass in the morning before school or during their lunch. You may fax a copy of the permission slip to 579-4646. Please include your child’s name and bus number and the bus number for the child they are riding home with.

12. Is there a dress code for students?

13. How do I retrieve my child's cell phone or other electronic device(s) that have been taken away?

Any student with their cell phone or other electronic device(s) turned on or visible will have it confiscated. It will be locked up until a parent or guardian comes to the school to pick up the item in the student office.

14. My child lost something at school. Where can we look to find that item?

A lost and found area is maintained in the student office and students are encouraged to look for misplaced belongings before and after school. Because of the tremendous amount of lost items we donate all unclaimed items twice a year, this allows the pile to be manageable. The items are donated to the clothing bank after Winter Break and the last at the end of the year.

If an item was believed to be lost or left in the PE locker room there is also a lost and found located there.
