Nutrition & Menus
The Marana Unified School District Food Services Department operates 16 school kitchens within the District offering breakfast and lunch on a daily basis during the school year. Each kitchen is staffed with a School Nutrition Association Certified Cafe Supervisor and several Cafe Workers. The Department also operates year round providing breakfast and lunch through the summer food program and Marana Cares Mobile.
All meals meet strict nutrition standards set by the USDA, the Wellness Policy, and are aligned with appropriate calorie limits, large servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, strict sodium targets and limits on saturated fat and portion sizes containing no trans fats.
Each school Cafe Supervisor orders, receives, and prepares their own food, directly at each school. Food Services operates with a staff of appox. 100 employees serving on average, over 9,000 meals each and over 1.6 million meals a year.
Meal Loan Policy
Food Service must maintain a responsible financial approach to remain self-supporting. Extending lunch loans to all students in the district can unduly burden the program. The District has adopted the following policy related to Meal Loans.
Students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade:
Students at this level will always be given a breakfast and lunch. Parents are responsible for repaying all monies loaned to them by the District for their child’s meals.
Students in Grades Nine through Twelve:
Students at these levels are allowed no meal loans.
A la Carte:
Meal loans are not extended to a la carte items such as milk, bottled water, or other food items made available for purchase. The student must have enough money on their account or cash to purchase the selected items.
Unit Meal Pricing
Required items must be selected to take advantage of the unit meal price.
Breakfast: $1.00 (No cost for schools participating in the Breakfast in Classroom Program)
ALL SCHOOLS - Reduced Price Meals:
Breakfast and Lunch are available for every student, everyday.
Marana USD participates in the Offer vs. Serve Program. This program allows students to choose what they would like to eat.
Breakfast is served in the classroom at 8 of our elementary schools and both middle schools.
Breakfast is served in the cafeteria before the first bell at our other 4 elementary schools and both high schools.Elementary and Middle Schools offer up to 5 lunch entrees
High Schools offer up to 8 or more lunch entrees daily, as well as a la carte choices found in the snack bar.
Menus are planned to meet the nutrition standards set by the USDA:
- Age appropriate calorie limits.
- Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable at breakfast and lunch).
- A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
- Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
- All grains offered in our school meals are whole grain-rich (the first ingredient must be a whole grain). This even includes the breading on our chicken nuggets!
- Strict sodium targets by grade group.
- Meals must also meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion sizes and can not contain any trans fats.
