Homework Hints

    • Set a definite study time each school day.
      • Your study period should have a start and end time.  If you finish before time is up, review.  Take a break from school before you begin your homework.  It's ok to schedule one or more short breaks in your study period. Find a proper place for studying.  It should be away from the TV, stereo, and other distractions.  You need a place to write and one that has adequate light.
    • Be prepared before you start.
      • Gather all materials needed to complete your assignments.  Get pencils, textbooks, sharpener, eraser, paper, ruler, calculator, and dictionary.
    • Get organized.
      • For starters, a notebook with dividers for different subjects and pockets for loose papers will make a big difference.
    • Make a daily list of homework assignments.
      • Check it at the end of the school day and make sure you take all necessary materials home.  If necessary show your teacher your assignment list before you leave for home to make sure you have it all right.
    • Work backwards to plan for long range assignments.
      • Record due dates on a blank calendar and write in what you must do each week or day to complete the assignment on time.  If a short paper is due Monday, the last step is the final draft.  Plan time for reading and note taking.  Estimate when the outline must be completed.  Estimate when the first draft must be completed and include time to make revisions to the first draft.  Then write the final draft.
    • Start the hardest assignment when you are the most alert.
      • Save the easier tasks for off-peak times, and tackle the tough ones during your sharpest time.  An easier assignment is a good break from a more difficult one.
    • Get your feet wet and then plunge in!
      • Start a big project at the easiest part, or schedule short work periods over many days.  Plan well in advance so you have time to do the project in smaller pieces.
