Meet the Principal - Matt Abney
It is a tremendous honor to join the Rattlesnake Ridge community for the 2018-19 school year. Rattlesnake Ridge has a tradition of excellence in the Marana Unified School District, and in all of my interactions, it has been evident that the students, teachers and staff have great pride in this school and are committed to serving this community. This tradition will continue for many years to come!
This will be my 12th year in education, and throughout my career, I have served in various roles to advocate for students as a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Tucson area, which is also where I grew up. After graduating from the University of Arizona with a B.A. in Elementary Education in 2006, I started my educational career as a 4th grade teacher. I began to coach and mentor high school students as a drum line instructor and decided to continue my career in secondary education as a high school English teacher and administrator. I completed my Master’s in Educational Leadership at Northern Arizona University in 2010 and earned a principal certificate. In 2012, I served as the Dean of Students at Mountain View High School and was named Associate Principal at Estes Elementary School two years later. In 2015, I began a doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Educational Leadership, which is still in progress. After serving at Estes for three years, I accepted the principal position at Rattlesnake Ridge.
I am a professional musician and enjoy composing and performing on drums and guitar. As an Eagle Scout, I also enjoy spending time outdoors, camping, biking, swimming and hiking. My wife, Audria, is a professional photographer, and my two children, Zach and Grace, are students in MUSD. I am invested in the Marana community and look forward to building relationships with all of our students and their families! It is going to be an amazing school year!
