As part of the Marana Schools 100-year celebration on April 25, we’re featuring the people who shaped our schools. Today, we honor the legacy of Marana High School Coach Norman J. Patton, a championship coach, mentor, and leader whose name now lives on in the “Patton Gym” at Marana High School.

Norman J. Patton

Marana High School Coach from 1965–1973

Marana High School proudly remembers Coach Norman J. Patton, whose legacy continues to shape Tiger athletics long after his passing in 2016. From 1965 to 1973, Coach Patton led the MHS boys basketball program to extraordinary success, building a tradition of excellence that remains part of the school’s identity today.

During his eight seasons at Marana, every team he coached qualified for the State Tournament. His teams captured three State Championships: 1969 Class B (24–0), 1970 Class B (24–5), and 1972 Class A (25–0), along with six Conference Championships and two State Runner-up finishes. He was named Arizona High School Basketball Coach of the Year in both 1969 and 1972, a testament to his leadership and impact on the game.

Coach Patton also served as an assistant football coach under Don Hawkins. The 1969–70 school year stands as one of the most remarkable in Arizona high school athletics history, with Marana boys teams winning state titles in football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. This incredible record has never been matched!

In recognition of his lasting impact, Marana High School named its basketball gymnasium in honor of Coach Norm Patton on December 5, 2019, a fitting tribute to a man who helped define Tiger basketball.

Coach Norman Patton’s dedication, leadership, and championship spirit lives on at Marana High School. His legacy endures in the gym that bears his name and in the generations of athletes who graduated from Marana High School.
