Being part of the MUSD K–12 experience as part of the Class of ’84 is something I’ll always remember. If you know, you know!

Some of my fondest memories from school range from funny to unforgettable. I’ll never forget getting a swat in the cafeteria from (namesake of Estes Elementary) Mrs. Estes at Marana Elementary, right in front of God and everybody! Later, at Marana High, being part of the wrestling team that won the state championship in 1983 was a highlight that shaped me and my love for athletics.

I had so many influential teachers along the way. Miss Anderson in elementary school and Larry Lemke in junior high. At the high school level, Susan Sloan and Robert Newman were just good people who genuinely cared. They kept pushing me to get my degree after high school, which made a huge difference in my life.

Sports were a big part of my experience, cross country, football, wrestling, and track. Back then, students were more multi-sport athletes; now things are more specialized. Wrestling became a lifelong passion for me, and I ended up coaching for about 30 years. Beyond athletics, the relationships I built with peers and staff are what really prepared me for life after graduation. I miss the friendships and camaraderie that came with competing in sports.

Looking back, school lunches back in the day were something special. Before the move to a la carte items, the lunch ladies could really cook! And overall, schools were more easygoing in the 80s. Today, students face more pressure, but it’s exciting to see programs like CTE and JTED giving students hands-on opportunities to explore their interests and careers.

Marana has changed a lot since I was a student, but the heart of the community remains strong. I’m proud to have grown up here, and as I look back on my time in MUSD, one thing is for sure: Class of ’84 rocks!
