Marana High School Launches Weapons Detection System
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a safe and secure learning environment, Marana Unified School District is piloting a new weapons detection system at Marana High School following Spring Break (March 2025), the OPENGATE weapons detection system, which enhances existing security measures.
The OPENGATE weapons detection system is designed to automatically screen people with bags and backpacks for weapons. It is similar to weapons detection systems used at concerts and sporting events nationwide. The system uses advanced technology to identify and alert school administrators to the presence of metals associated with weapons that may or may not be concealed upon entry to campus. Families and students can watch this video on the OPENGATE system to learn more.
Administrators worked with MHS Law and Public Safety classes to help inform operational efforts prior to launching this new technology on campus. Students identified snags in the implementation process, recorded videos to educate students, and gave feedback on the new procedure. Student feedback has been positive overall, and students have shared that the system helps them feel safer. They also shared that they hope that students will be less likely to bring drugs onto campus because of the new system.
