MUSD Support Staff of the Year: Pat Southard

Congratulations to Mrs. Pat Southard, Secretary at Marana Middle School, who is the MUSD 2024 Support Staff of the Year!

Mrs. Southard has played an integral role at MUSD for over 25 years! She is the principal’s secretary at Marana Middle School (MMS), but she is truly the secretary for the entire school. As the principal's secretary, she coordinates a multitude of tasks, from managing office staff and overseeing the schedules of 40+ substitute teachers, to processing purchase orders and scheduling meetings.

What sets Mrs. Southard apart is her unwavering commitment to the well-being of everyone associated with the school. Her role transcends administrative duties as she actively listens to the needs and concerns of parents, staff, and students. If there is not an administrator available to help someone out, she takes initiative, ensuring that no one walks away feeling unheard or unassisted.

Recognizing the diverse needs of students, Mrs. Southard goes the extra mile by providing a nurturing environment in her office. She takes time to understand and support students, even offering a box of Legos to those students who may need a moment of calm during challenging situations. Her proactive stance in managing behavioral issues reflects her dedication to shaping a positive and respectful school culture.

Mrs. Southard actively seeks ways to contribute to instructional strategies and student achievement goals. She supervises a before and after-school program that provides students with a quiet space to work and study. Every interaction with Mrs. Southard leaves a lasting impression of warmth, empathy, and professionalism. Whether answering phone calls or addressing concerns, she ensures that parents feel valued and reassured that their child will receive the care they deserve.

In every phone call, interaction, and decision, Mrs. Southard radiates Falcon Pride, Respect, and Responsibility. Her ability to see the strengths in each individual, coupled with her commitment to meeting diverse needs, establishes her as a treasure within the school community. 

Mrs. Pat Southard is not just a secretary, she is a compassionate force driving positive change and fostering a supportive community within Marana Middle School and we are so lucky to have her as a part of MUSD!

The Marana Unified School District annually recognizes dedicated employees, a teacher, administrator and support staff member who possess outstanding work abilities, motivate and inspire students and colleagues, possess leadership qualities, and contribute to colleagues and students in ways that go beyond the usual expectations of their job.

In addition to being recognized at their work site, Employees of the Year will be recognized by the Marana School’s 2340 Foundation during the Marana Schools’ 2340 Foundation Celebration of Excellence luncheon on Friday, March 29, 2024 at the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain.
