State Record Breaker: Owen Proper Becomes Arizona’s All-Time Wins Leader in Wrestling!

Congratulations to MHS Senior Owen Proper on making Arizona wrestling history! With his victories at this year’s state competition, Owen has officially become Arizona’s all-time wins leader in high school wrestling, earning an incredible 255 career wins.

Owen surpassed the previous record of 253 wins set by Eric Garcia of Coolidge High School between 2004 and 2007, a record that stood for nearly two decades.

Breaking a state record is no small feat. It reflects years of discipline, determination, and relentless work on and off the mat. Throughout his career, Owen has demonstrated not only exceptional skill and competitiveness, but also the sportsmanship and leadership that define championship athletes.

In addition to becoming Arizona’s wins leader, Owen is a 4-time Arizona State Placer and a 4-time All American. His national accomplishments include being a 2-time USA Wrestling Folkstyle National All American (2024 & 2025), a 2025 NHSCA All American, and the 2025 USA Wrestling Preseason National Runner-Up.

Owen’s excellence extends beyond the mat. He carries an outstanding 4.20 GPA and was named a 2025 NHSCA Academic All American. A multi-sport athlete for most of his high school career, Owen competed in Varsity Golf and Baseball before committing to wrestling full time in his senior year.

He has committed to continue his academic and athletic career at Utah Valley University, competing at the Division I level in the Big 12 Conference.
