Bus Safety: Avoid the Danger Zone

School bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars! More often than not, injuries do not occur in crashes, but as students enter and exit the bus.

Remember these safety tips from the National Transportation Safety Board:

• Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street
• Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop
• When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus
• Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus
• Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus
• Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning schools buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!

Danger Zones

School Bus Danger Zone (10 ft surrounding bus) The Danger Zone is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of being hit. Children should stay ten feet away from the bus, or as far away as they can, and never go behind it. They should take five giant steps in front of the bus before crossing, so they can be seen by the driver.
