Mask Update from MUSD: Sept 28, 2021
MUSD Families and Staff,
Following an approved motion by the Marana Unified School District Governing Board on August 20, which required masks while indoors at any MUSD site through September 28, 2021, we are transitioning to masks being optional effective September 29, 2021.
One of our goals has always been to stay in compliance with the law while navigating decisions related to COVID-19. House Bill 2898 had prohibited schools from requiring face coverings for students and staff during school hours and on school property or to participate in in-person learning effective Sept. 29. Yesterday, a Maricopa County judge ruled that the law prohibiting mask mandates in schools was in violation of the Arizona Constitution. Based on the aforementioned Governing Board’s motion, unless there is new action taken by the Governing Board at an upcoming meeting, masks will not be required after September 28.
Since the beginning of the school year, and while the mask requirement has been in place, the District has experienced a downward trend in cases and a reduction in the transmission of COVID. This has resulted in more students staying healthy and subsequently in school due to reduced exposures. This has taken place at time in which our community continues to experience a high transmission rate. Just last week, Pima County Health Department co-authored a study that shows universal mask wearing in Arizona K-12 schools considerably reduced the likelihood of a school-associated COVID-19 outbreak.
As such, the administration is strongly recommending that all teachers, students and visitors on campus continue to wear a mask when indoors regardless of vaccination status until Pima County moves out of a high transmission status. As we move toward masks being optional but strongly recommended, I want to ask our entire community to work toward supporting our goal of keeping schools open with civility, compassion and understanding. I want individuals throughout the District to feel safe and respected. I know everyone is facing varying levels of pandemic fatigue; however, we must remain strong and unified.
Thank you for your support of our students and staff as we work together to provide the best in-person learning opportunities for our students in MUSD.
