Thornydale teacher presented with Educator of Year by Civil Engineers
Congratulations to Marty Castro, Thornydale Elementary School math specialist, awarded the 2018 K-8 Educator of the Year for Southern Arizona by the Arizona Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers for her commitment to education, contributions to public welfare, professional integrity and ethics.
The Southern Arizona Educator of the Year Award is presented to an educator or engineer with outstanding contributions in the field of engineering education, especially in the mentoring of students and young engineers. Ms. Castro was recognized at the Southern Arizona Engineers Week Banquet on Tuesday, February 20,
With over 35 years in teaching, Ms. Castro is student and community focused and always looks out for what is in the student’s best interests. Described as a strong, passionate leader, who focuses on students’ progress and success, she has been instrumental in the school creating math labs in kindergarten through 6th grade. Mrs. Castro makes sure to effectively give each lesson a purpose, which links to the student’s interests and daily lives. In addition, Marty is a district trainer for Number Talks and doesn’t hesitate to give teachers strategies for their classrooms. She also volunteers after school providing math tutoring and plans weekly school assemblies to engage everyone in the school community. Ms. Castro inspires students to not just grow academically but to also grow their compassion for others.
