Marana High School Teacher Selected as Finalist for UA Amazing Teacher of the Year
Kenton Webb, a welding teacher at Marana High School, has been selected as a finalist for the 2021 University of Arizona Amazing Teacher of the Year. A committee of educators and community members selected him as one of the nine finalists from submissions received from Southern Arizona high schools.
Mr. Webb graduated Southern Nevada Vocational Tech Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he majored in Welding and Fabrication. Upon completing his certification, he was hired as a steel connector and welder. He was accepted into the Ironworkers Union and quickly climbed the industry ranks as a lead steel connector and welder.
Mr. Webb joined Marana High School as a welding teacher and founded the welding program in 2009. Program enrollment grew from 65 students at its conception to 375 students enrolled currently. Over the last five years, Mr. Webb’s summer welding boot camps have resulted in 110 students receiving 186 industry certifications. The welding program even expanded its presence to allow participation from interested students at Mountain View High School.
For the last three years, the Town of Marana has commissioned Mr. Webb’s welding program to design and fabricate sculptures for the community in two locations. For each project, Mr. Webb selected top welding students to participate and the students were paid for their hard work in bringing those sculptures to life. Additionally, Marana High School’s USA Welding Club students have won their regional competition the past three years.
An amazing teacher inspires wonder. Mr. Webb has the leadership, creativity and commitment to inspire students to experience this trade. Congratulations on this notable achievement, Mr. Webb!
