MHS Golfer Selected for PURE Insurance Championship
Nathan Romero, a senior and up an coming golfer from Marana High School, is preparing for an opportunity of a lifetime, competing for the Pro-Junior Team title in the 2021 PURE Insurance Championship Impacting the First Tee. An official PGA Tour Champions event, he will play alongside professional and amateur golfers, which will be aired on the Golf Channel.
“This is one of my dream courses – and one of the most beautiful courses in the world. It gives me the chance to play with some of the best golfers while meeting new people with similar passions,” said Nathan.
Nathan is one of 81 participants between the ages of 15-19 from the First Tee program selected from across the country to play based on his golf proficiency and on his personal growth and life skills exemplified through the First Tee programs. The First Tee, which has a chapter in Tucson, is a youth development organization established by the Tucson Conquistadors. The program focuses on teaching life skills and helping kids and teens build their strength of character through the game of golf by implementing nine core values - honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment.
Nathan’s success in golf escalated since he first picked up a club at the age of eight on a family trip in Sedona, AZ. While it was challenging at first, he quickly fell in the love with the sport.
After joining the First Tee, he became active in the Southern Arizona Junior Golf Association, the Junior Golf Association of Arizona, and the Southwest PGA. Upon entering high school, he joined the Marana High School boys’ golf team, where he has remained the #1 golf player on the team based on his scores and overall performance.
“When a student pursues his dreams and passion like Nathan has and continues to do, we are all inspired and amazed,” said Dr. David Mandel, principal of MHS. “Nathan demonstrates his Tiger Pride in so many ways – we cannot wait to see what he accomplishes.”
Playing in a national golf championship is a major accomplishment, and it comes weeks after Nathan returned from another personal golf achievement – being nationally selected as 1 of 40 teens to attend the First Tee Golf Leadership Summit in partnership with the PGA Tour Superstore in Emigrant, Montana. This opportunity focused on bringing youth golfers together to strengthen leadership skills, build character, self-confidence, and resiliency, which are incredible life skills he can apply in all aspects of his life.
The dates for PURE Insurance Championship are September 21-26, 2021. The 2021 Tournament will air live on the Golf Channel during the following times (PST):
- Saturday, September 25th; 1:00pm – 4:00pm
- Sunday, September 26th; 12:00pm – 3:00pm
“I am grateful God has truly blessed me with talent and opportunities, and I hope I can live up to what He has in store for me,” said Nathan.
