Mask Mandate: Process & Exemptions: Aug. 22, 2021
August 22, 2021
Effective Monday, August 23, 2021, Marana Unified School District (MUSD) is requiring masks/face coverings for all students, staff, and visitors while indoors on campus. As we enter the week, we understand the need to accommodate those families and individuals needing immediate exemption from this mandate, but lacking proper documentation. While the mask mandate officially goes into effect on Monday, August 23, in an effort to allow families an appropriate timeframe in order to collect any required documentation for an exemption, strict enforcement of the mask mandate will begin on Thursday, August 26. The process and form for requesting a mask exemption is outlined below.
Continuing in-person learning by implementing key safety mitigation strategies to slow down the spread of COVID is a priority for MUSD. Wearing a face mask is a key mitigation strategy, along with physical distancing, good hand hygiene and cleaning high touch points. These critical strategies were successful for us throughout the 2020-2021 school year. We continued with mitigation strategies as we began this school year, with masks being optional. On August 20, 2021, the MUSD Governing Board approved a return to requiring masks indoors.
We believe that this requirement on school campuses that begins August 23, 2021 and extends through September 28, 2021, as now permitted by law, will have a positive impact on reducing the number of COVID cases we are seeing at schools. We understand that for a small percentage of families, exemptions may be needed. A process has been developed to address these requests and determine outcomes on a case-by-case basis.
The District will provide reasonable exemptions for those students who have a demonstrated need. Parents or guardians may use the Request for an Exemption from Mask Wearing form to request an exemption to the MUSD indoor mask requirement. Requests for an exemption can be made at any time during the school year.
Please submit the Request for an Exemption from Mask Wearing form online. If you are unable to access this form electronically, please contact your school and one will be provided to you. The exemption request will be reviewed by MUSD staff and you will receive a timely decision.
Requests must contain a demonstrated need and, to the extent possible, documentation to support the request. A medical exemption would require a doctor’s note or a documented medical condition. If a student is currently identified as a student with a disability, documentation may already be available. A religious exemption would need to indicate a sincerely-held religious belief that would prohibit your child from wearing a mask at school. This would include a note from the clergy or church official.
