STEMAZing Program Receives $10,000 Grant

Students working on a STEMAZing eco system project made from a 2-liter soda bottleBayer Fund has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Marana Unified School District (MUSD) STEMAZing Teacher Leader program, which supports Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Professional Development.

The STEMAZing program is an initiative led by the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent, and it targets early childhood, elementary and middle school teachers who requested additional guidance on STEM teaching and learning.

As a Bayer Fund grant recipient for the third consecutive year for this program, MUSD is recognized for its record of success in working with students to provide robust STEM learning opportunities across all grade levels and schools.

The new funding supports continued professional development of science teachers by fellow STEMAZing teacher leaders. These teacher leaders are trained in the Three Dimensions of Science Instruction, which integrates science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas. The STEMAZing Teacher Leader Program facilitates professional development workshops, builds professional learning networks, and improves STEM teaching and learning in all Marana schools, across grade levels and sites.

“With the adoption of the 2018 Arizona Science standards, an instructional shift was required to ensure students were scientifically literate as well as college and career-ready,” said Kristin Reidy, MUSD assistant superintendent. “MUSD teachers are continuing to learn this new approach to science education to increase their capacity to prepare students for success on the new Arizona Science Standards Assessment.”

MUSD has implemented the STEMAZing Teacher Leader Program since the 2019-2020 school year. In the first year, eight teacher leaders trained 149 fellow teachers, reaching 3,932 students. In the second year of the program, which occurred during the pandemic, 349 teachers received training, reaching 9,031 students.
